(Tl;dr) I’ve posted a new online course on Skillshare in which I show how to bake two types of typical Austrian farmer’s bread: one with yeast and one with sourdough. You can watch this course (and all other courses) for free if you sign up for a free 2-week trial via this link. It is also available on Udemy.
I recently posted my latest course on Skillshare. This time it’s a little different from my usual topics, but it’s something I’ve been passionate about for many years.
If you’ve ever wanted to know how we make homemade bread here in Austria, this is the course for you.
The type of bread we will be making is a typical artisan “farmer’s bread”.

In my country, Austria, bread is part of our tradition. And our part of the world is quite famous for our bread.
So I am not a professional baker, I am a normal person like you. I don’t have a fancy kitchen or special equipment. But I learned to bake traditional bread from my grandmother when I was a kid.
What I talk about in this bread baking course
- In the first part of the course, I show you how to make your own sourdough starter.
- It takes a few days to make the starter. So while you wait, we’ll bake a loaf of bread with yeast. In this part, I explain all the basics and what you need to know about baking bread. By the way, there is nothing wrong with pure yeast bread. If you do it right, it’s just as good as sourdough bread. In fact, many people prefer it over sourdough bread because it’s less work. So if you want to know how to make a loaf of simple bread, this part of the course is for you.
In part three, when your sourdough is ready, we will bake sourdough bread together. In this part, we’ll move a little faster and apply everything you learned in the last part where we made a loaf of yeast bread. And I will show you how to keep your sourdough starter alive for many years.
- Finally, I’ll give you some tips and ideas to experiment with.
Why I love homemade bread
I love fresh, homemade bread. And it has many advantages: It’s cheaper, it tastes better, and you know what’s in it. Plus, the smell of freshly baked bread is the most wonderful thing in the world.
Ultimately, good bread only needs four ingredients: Water, flour, salt and time. This is true for sourdough bread, because sourdough starter is made from flour and water. If you want to bake without sourdough, then you need one more ingredient: yeast.
But the most important factor is time. And actually doing the work and baking bread to gain the experience.
It’s a great feeling when you hold your first homemade bread in your hands, and even better when you can taste it!
